About Fasciola hepatica

The trematode Fasciola hepatica, or sheep liver fluke or common liver fluke, is a parasite that infects humans, cows and sheep. It causes a disease called fascioliasis, infection arises from ingestion of metacercariae on water plants such as watercress. In the UK, Fasciola is generally common in farmed livestock which graze upon wetland pastures where the parasites intermediate snail host thrives.

Genome Assembly & Annotation

Assembly

This genome assembly originates from the sensitive Adult fluke S strain of Fasciola hepatica, sequenced using PacBio technology. The assembly process employed the Hifi/hifiasm method with additional HiC scaffolding. This genome was provided by Prof. Steve Patterson, Centre for Genomic Research and NERC Environmental Omics Facility, Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, University of Liverpool.

This improved genome has replaced the older PRJEB25283 - GCA_900302435.1 from the same group, in release 19.

Annotation

The annotation was provided by Prof. Steve Patterson, Centre for Genomic Research and NERC Environmental Omics Facility, Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, University of Liverpool. The gene models were predicted by BRAKER3 assisted by a mix of short- and long-read RNA-Seq data.
