About Schistosoma turkestanicum
Schistosoma turkestanicum is a parasitic blood fluke that infects domestic and wild ruminants, including sheep, goats, and cattle. This species is primarily found in the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe particularly in Iran, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Hungary. S. turkestanicum has a complex life cycle, involving freshwater snails as intermediate hosts and mammalian hosts as definitive hosts. In many countries of Asia, cercarial dermatitis (CD) caused by S. turkestanicum is considered to be an emerging public health problem especially for people who work in water-covered lands. Cercarial dermatitis caused by the larvae of S. turkestanicum has also been detected in Hungary.
Genome Assembly & Annotation
This annotated genome assembly was produced as part of the doctoral thesis of Duncan Berger: [Berger, D. (2021). Comparative and population genomic analyses of the parasitic blood flukes (Doctoral thesis)](https://doi.org/10.17863/CAM.86667).
The assembly was generated from PacBio long-read sequencing data and scaffolded using Hi-C.
The source material for genome sequencing was three adult male worms, originally obtained from Hungary, provided by Alexandra Juhaz and Gabor Majoros (University of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest), and Scott Lawton (SRUC) and Milly Eldridge (Kingston University). Additional worms from the same collection were used for gene finding.
